The holidays are just around the corner, and we know this Fall a lot of Members are working hard to tone up for the holiday season. Some of our clubs in Houston and Central Texas are bringing you some tips to reach your health goals and get in shape for this holiday season.
Drink More Water
Not only will water keep you hydrated and make your skin glow, but drinking water can keep your stomach full. Dehydration from a lack of water can often cause you to mistake thirst for hunger. According to Livestrong.com, “Dehydration causes you to believe you need to eat when you really need liquid intake.” To avoid confusion between hunger and thirst and taking in excess calories, keep your body hydrated at all times.

This week, Las Colinas Country Club welcomes the return of the Warrior Open, a competitive 36-hole golf tournament that honors U.S. service members who serve and sacrifice to defend the United States of America. This tournament also honors the many organizations that support the military and their families, and Las Colinas Country Club could not be more proud to welcome participants.
After a warm-up round yesterday, the first official round of the Warrior Open begins today with warrior-only competition. Tomorrow the warriors will be paired with PGA tour professionals for an exciting 18-hole Pro-Am. During the tournament, service members have the opportunity to chat with President Bush, who frequently travels around to every hole visiting the players and taking pictures with family members.
"We will crown a champion. More importantly, we will honor all those who serve and sacrifice to defend our freedom." –President George W. Bush
The Warrior Open is a part of the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, whose mission is to honor the service and sacrifice of post-9/11 veterans and military families by improving their well-being and unleashing their potential.
We are proud to open our Club to these extraordinary service members, and look forward to an amazing tournament. We wish the participants luck, and thank them for their service and sacrifice.
The Hackberry Creek Country Club ladies’ USTA 3.5 tennis team is heading to Palm Springs, CA for the national competition October 9 – 11!
The ladies’ journey to nationals began this spring, when the team won their division 8-0 to qualify for the city championships. At that competition, they battled fellow ClubCorp clubs, Brookhaven and Canyon Creek Country Clubs, to win five straight matches and cinch the victory.
Texas is such a huge and very competitive state, that it is a section unto itself. At sectionals, the team played well, and was 3-1 going into the semis. They won the semi competition, defeating Dallas Country Club 4-1. In winning sectionals, they defeated the best that Texas could offer, including teams from San Antonio, Austin, Amarillo and Dallas.
Good luck to the Hackberry ladies as they take on the best 3.5 teams across the country!

Another Brookhaven Country Club junior golfer is born! At only 5 years old, Grayson McCool was the youngest boy at Brookhaven’s half-day golf camp, but he didn’t let that stop him. Even though the youngest age for the class was 7, the director was confident that he would be fine in the big kids’ camp, which included high school kids. Mom was concerned because he can be shy when trying new things, but “he did great and absolutely loved it.”
On the first day, he ended up partnering with one of the coaches because all the other kids already had a partner, but something exciting happened. As Grayson tells it, “I hit one ball and boom, it went really far. Then another and boom, it went really far. Then the coach said, ‘Hey Mike, come look at this kid!’ ‘cause he thought I was good.”
At snack time, Grayson was ready to order at the snack bar with his grandfather’s Member number that they had practiced together until he memorized it. To his disappointment, Teri, who has served three generations of McCools, already knew who he was and didn’t need his number.
By the middle of the week, he was starting to make friends. During a putting contest, Grayson defeated one of the big kids and, from then on, he became the class favorite. Among the kids, he was known as a really good golfer and they would chant his name during his turn. On the last day, Grayson received the “Big Heart” award and glowing reviews from his coaches and the other campers. Mom considers his first year a success and is “so happy that he had a great time and that everyone was so nice to him!”
Grayson's story is just one of many, and thanks to One Night at McCools blog, we are able to share it with you. Brookhaven Country Club is living out our mission of Building Relationships and Enriching Lives. Well done, Brookhaven!

Congratulations to Philip Barbaree of Southern Trace Country Club! On July 25, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, South Carolina. Down by 5 holes with eight left to go, he made a dramatic comeback for a 37-hole win. It will go down in USGA championship history as the most holes played in the past 10 years. With this victory, he became the first Louisiana resident since 1977 to win this championship. He also matched the largest comeback in the 68-year history of the event.
Philip grew up in the junior programs and on the courses of Southern Trace Country Club. His Dallas-based instructor, Cameron McCormick, also coached 2015 U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth.
Way to go, Philip! We’re proud to have you as a Member in the ClubCorp family!

As the U.S. Open swings through Chambers Bay this week, Brent Cohen, General Manager of nearby Canterwood Golf & Country Club in Canterwood, Washington, was treated to a pretty unique experience. Thanks to two Canterwood Members, Cohen and Head Golf Pro Dale Davis were invited to serve as first tee starters during a practice round. Member Larry Gilhuly is a USGA agronomist and has worked on the Chambers Bay course for several years, and Member Danny Sink is the Championship Director for the U.S. Open — and because of them, Cohen and Davis found themselves standing next to some of golf's brightest names as they teed off for a practice round. And to add to the fun, one of the golfers lining up to tee off at his very first U.S. Open was Kevin Lucas, a former Employee Partner who is now playing professionally. Ironically enough, Cohen hired Lucas, who was still in high school at the time, as an outside services attendant at Empire Ranch in Sacramento. After playing at the University of Nevada-Reno, Lucas took a turn playing through the mini-tours, including the Golden State Tour, where he collected wins. On June 11th, Kevin shot 68-66 to win his Sectional Qualifier, earning a place in the field at Chambers Bay. "It was a blast from the past to not only see him," Cohen says proudly. "But to get to announce his name on the first tee at his first U.S. Open was really something special." A Magic Moment, indeed.
