Morgan Run IMG Academy Junior World Championship

Over 140 boys from more than 30 different countries competed last month in the IMG Academy Junior World Championships Boys’ Division Ages 11-12 at Morgan Run Club & Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Anton Ouyang from San Jose, California, won the competition with a score of 13 under. Jay Lang Jr., a Member from Morgan Run playing on his home turf, won the putting competition. Kudos to the Morgan Run staff, which treated the kids like professionals in one of their most important tournaments of the year!

Gregory Byrne, Head Golf Course Superintendent at Cherry Valley Country Club in Skillman, New Jersey, really rose to the occasion for some Members whose son, a senior in high school, needed help with a school project. As part of a capstone experience needed to graduate, Griffin Ferrara was required to choose a field of his choice, immerse himself in a study related to that field and give a presentation to students and faculty on his findings. Ferrara, an avid golfer at the club and interested in the environment, asked Gregory how he balances golf course maintenance and the environment.

Gregory carved out several days in his schedule to allow Griffin to follow him and learn about managing the golf course in an environmentally sound way. They covered creating an agronomic plan by assessing the soils, water and plant needs and an integrated pest management plan that is safe for the environment, effective and efficient and cost effective.

In the end, Ferrara was fascinated by the scope of Gregory’s job and based his presentation, which was met with great interest by the faculty and his peers, on the decision-making methods. Ferrara knocked it out of the park and went on to graduate with a new level of respect for the work Golf Course Superintendents do every day. For both Ferrara and Gregory, the experience was great – true Magic Moments throughout.

Silver Lake Member Guest Invitational

The staff at Silver Lake Country Club in Silver Lake, Ohio, put on another successful Member Guest Invitational with a British Open theme, complete with the annual awards dinner and the proper attire of Bermuda shorts and jackets.

The Golf Staff, led by Glenn Cunningham, the Head Golf Professional, got into the theme this year – all donning the required attire and then some.

Kudos to the entire staff pulling off the awards dinner and at the same time hosting a wedding for 180 Guests. A great time was had by all.

Silver Lake Member Guest Invitational pays tribute to the British Open

The World Golf Championship – Bridgestone Invitational officially begins tomorrow at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. There still will be lots of activity at the club today though as practice rounds take place on the South Course. That isn’t all that will go on today:

Honoring Arnold Palmer

In addition, the 2017 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational will honor the late Arnold Palmer. The tournament is showing its support of the Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation with Arnie’s March Ohio, a fundraising walk which will lead participants around the par-5, 16th hole, which Palmer famously dubbed “The Monster."

Afterward, in support of his legacy, the tournament will dedicate the naming of the iconic bridge on 16 (pictured above) to Palmer in a tribute ceremony. Members of Palmer’s family will be on site, and plan to have a few memorabilia items for fans and March attendees to enjoy throughout the day including Palmer’s golf bag and the signature colorful “Arnold Palmer” umbrellas in various fan areas.

Ambassador of Golf Award

This evening, the Ambassador of Golf Award will be presented Peter Jacobsen, known for his passion and personality throughout his 40-year PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions careers. The award is presented annually by Northern Ohio Golf Charities to a person who has fostered the ideals of the game on an international level and whose concern for others extends beyond the golf course.

Remind your Members today that your TVs will be tuned to the tournament tomorrow and through the weekend and to stop in to the club to watch the excitement. Create pride in belonging by reminding them that Firestone Country Club is a member of the ClubCorp family.

August 2, 2007 – Eric Affeldt announces the first fundraising efforts for the Employee Partners Care Foundation.

“Individually, we are a drop. Together, we are an ocean.” Those words from Japanese poet Ryunosuke Satoro are how Eric Affeldt, ClubCorp CEO and, at that time, president, announces the launch of the first-ever fundraising drive to begin collecting donations from Employee Partners for the newly created Employee Partners Care Foundation (E.P.C.F.).

Eric talks about the fund, solely dedicated to assist Employee Partners, and how it will have a positive effect on the lives of many, including, most likely, staff members at each club. He encourages Employee Partners to hold fundraising events at their clubs and talks about how much of a difference can be made if each Employee Partner donates just $2 from each paycheck.

Eric was right – we are an ocean. Since its creation in 2007, the E.P.C.F. has assisted more than 1,500 Employee Partners and their families and has granted over $1,800,000 in assistance to Employee Partners and their families.
